Black Friday 2020 was predicted to beat the UK online sales record and that prediction was not wrong. It was a record-breaking year with online sales reportedly up 60% on the previous year.
Overall, UK online retailers saw increased traffic, orders and revenue. However, the average order value did decrease by 8% year-on-year to £105.73, while conversion rates soared, being up 34%*.
The lower average order values could be due to retailers heavily discounting items to ensure they attract customers, but either way, it is fair to say that Black Friday 2020 was a huge success!
Of course, in late 2020, consumers pretty much had to focus their spending online. There is still much debate about the extent to which consumers will now return to the high street.
Recently there has been a decrease in internet sales as a percentage of total retail sales, between January 2021 (36.5%) and June 2021 (26.2%)**.
This percentage has risen again since June, however, following a similar pattern to last year.
With internet sales levels still at the highest we have ever seen them, retailers should be making sure their online presence is ready for Black Friday 2021!
