On Bank Holiday Monday, Radio 4 listeners were treated to the sound of Ascendancy’s very own Helen Culshaw. Helen was invited to chat to Woman’s Hour about the challenges faced by women in rural enterprise, and went off to BBC Radio Shropshire to record her piece alongside Polly Gibb, Director of Women in Rural Enterprise. Joining them was Rebecca Rayner of Glebe Farm Foods in Cambridgeshire, while Jane Garvey led the conversation from London. This was Helen’s second time on the show. Previously, in 2011, she was invited to talk about delegation in business. While the others chatted about life as female entrepreneurs on farms, Helen gave her take on the digital sector. She spoke about the challenge of balancing home life and child care while maintaining a busy and successful internet marketing agency. When asked why she started the business on her own 10 years ago, Helen said, “I knew that I wouldn’t find a ready-made job doing what I do best, which is websites and online marketing, that would enable me to work flexibly around my children.” Helen has since built Ascendancy into a team of 7 working from offices in the Shropshire town of Shifnal.
